On the Road

Time for our annual trek to California!  Mark insisted that we leave at 2:00AM which, as much as I grumbled about it, turned out to be wonderful!  We made great time and ended up in Albuquerque for lunch!  We had plenty of time to play at the Albuquerque Botanical Gardens and Aquarium.

And girls had their first experience at Cracker Barrel--loved it!
We ended with swimming at the hotel--it was a great day!  Next stop--Cal-I-forn-I-A!

Dr. Suess Week

This week turned out to be the biggest flop of all!  I'm not a huge Dr. Suess fan--sure some of his books are pretty fun but they are sooooooooo long!  And some don't make any sense!  But I chose to do this theme because I got tickets to see Seussical: the Musical at the Plano Children's Theater.  I was pretty excited about that, we even checked out the CD from the library so we could be familiar with it.

I found some great worksheets here:

Instead of making the traditional "green eggs and ham" I made it this way with lime sherbert and whipped cream for FHE treat.
We played pin the egg on the plate.  The girls got a kick out of that!

But we went to the show with our friends.  The lights dimmed . . . and then they started doing Snow White and Seven Dwarfs!  No explanation about the change in program!  And it was a terribly bad production on top of it!  I went home fuming!  I emailed them my frustration and with the help of my friend who went with me and several emails later, they did give us tickets to another show of our choice.  That still doesn't make up for a totally disappointing experience.  What a let down.
The rest of the week went downhill from there.  I tried to get the girls to make Dr. Suess hats but they didn't want to.  I ran out of time for most of the other activities (it was a really busy week working AND packing for our trip).  There are tons of cute ideas out there, they just didn't happen at our house.

Here's what we read:
Hooray of Diffendoofer Day!
Great Day for Up
Green Eggs and Ham
Scrambled Eggs Super
Dr. Suess
Happy Birthday to You
The Butter Battle Book (this one was disturbing!  Don't read it!)
One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish
The Sneetches

America Week

This week we talked about America of course since it was week of the Fourth of July.  All of the pictures came from the day of.  We had a ward breakfast and parade so we decked out in our patriotic finest!

The girls got their faces painted.

The big parade.  One day this week was spent decorating their bikes!

We went swimming and barbequing at our friends, the Lindeman's, down the street. They requested the fruit pasta salad I made for Memorial Day.  I found these really cute star ravioli at Costco so I hoped they would work.  It turned out just okay.

Mark had to work that night (ugh) and there was no way I was attempting to take all the girls to see fireworks by myself (especially since they don't start until after 9:00!) so we watched them on TV and made some of our own while listening to plenty of patriotic music.

This week we also looked at a map and talked about the route we would take to California, next week!

The Scrambled States of America
The Scrambled States of America Talent Show
